Being told you need a root canal can sound intimidating. We get that. A lot of patients come in expecting the appointment to be much worse than it really is. Most of the time, the biggest relief is simply knowing what to expect.
At Matlock Dentistry, we walk patients through this all the time because questions are normal. If you have never had a root canal before, it helps to know that the purpose is simple - we want to remove infection, ease discomfort, and help save your natural tooth.
Inside your tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When that area becomes infected or badly inflamed, it can lead to pain, sensitivity, swelling, or a constant feeling that something is just not right. In some cases, the tooth may also darken or become more painful when you bite down.
When that happens, a root canal gives us a way to treat the problem at its source instead of removing the tooth altogether.
Your visit usually begins with us taking a close look at the tooth and making sure the area is fully numb before we begin. From there, we carefully remove the damaged tissue inside the tooth, clean the space, and seal it.
Most patients are surprised by how manageable the appointment feels. In many cases, it is not the frightening experience people imagine. Once the tooth is numb, the treatment is often more about staying comfortable and letting us do the work than anything else.
It is normal to have some tenderness after a root canal, especially once the numbness wears off. The area can feel sore for a few days, but that usually improves as the tooth settles down.
